The garden features several different ecosystems including wetlands, upland forests, meadows, gardens, and grasslands. The entire landscape of this park was created using natural materials which makes it a great place to learn about sustainable practices. What plants can you see in the botanical garden?

Today, there are over 11,000 different types of plants on the garden grounds. Some of the most commonly seen plants are:

  • bluebonnets (Texas’ state flower)
  • purple sage, lavender cotton, and agave (a plant used to make tequila!)

There is also a large grove dedicated to the Chihuly glass sculptures. If you’ve ever heard of Dale Chihuly, you’ll probably recognize some of his work!

The gardens also house the Zilker Hillside Theatre where they host concerts and performances for free on weekends during the spring months.

And of course, there’s the Zilker Zephyr! The train goes around a small loop in one section of the garden and is great for kids to enjoy. It makes six stops along its route every half hour from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays during March through October.
